Minor Feelings
사소한 감정

I was born in Australia and am half Korean and part South African and Lithuanian. I look Asian, have an Australian accent, can’t use chopsticks and know very little about my heritage. Growing up half Asian in Australia was a constant struggle of trying to fit in and justify my Australian-ness, and as a result I rejected my cultural heritage. It wasn’t until I travelled, saw other cultures and stumbled upon a Korean Artisanal paper technique whilst studying that I began to be curious, accept and be proud of my heritage. This collection is a continuation of my journey of self acceptance and personal growth, through the exploration of my Korean heritage.

Squares and layering are the basis throughout all Korean design. Hanbok, the name for Korea’s traditional dress is made up of two-dimensional squares, only gaining its form when worn on the body. Each piece in my collection begins as a two-dimensional square and transforms into a voluminous three-dimensional garment. The fabrication used has been made from Hanji; ’Han’ meaning Korean and ‘Ji’ meaning paper. I applied Joomchi an ancient Korean technique of felting the Hanji, to create a unique lace like fabric which has been paired with hand dyed dupion silk.

Through research informed design, collage and drape, I have used traditional Korean Artisanal techniques and referenced traditional Korean archetypes. Minor Feelings is a collection that is personal and empowering, creating a deeper connection to culture and heritage. My hope for this collection is to inspire and empower others who are also grappling with their own cultural identity.
